The roads before 7am are empty, the light is low, and the Gulf is right there. Here are the ten routes worth knowing.

Pak Nam Pran sits at the centre of one of the best road cycling areas on the Gulf coast. Flat coastal roads, empty weekday mornings, a dam loop with elevation, national park access to the south, and Hua Hin's infrastructure to the north. The Hua Hin Roadies ride from here regularly. The Asian kite championships happen on this beach. And the roads before 7am are as quiet as anywhere in Thailand.

Here are the ten routes worth knowing — from a 22km recovery spin to a 108km day into Khao Sam Roi Yot and back.

1 — Pranburi Dam + Army Camp + Harry's Bike Café Loop

55–86 km · 500–750m elevation

The weekly anchor ride for the Hua Hin Roadies — Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday mornings. The loop climbs out of the flat coastal plain to the Pranburi Dam, passes the army camp roads, and ends (or pauses) at Harry's Bike Café, which has become the unofficial headquarters of cycling in this area. Vineyard extensions are common for those wanting more climbing. Starting from the villa you're 15–20 minutes from the route — leave at 5am on empty roads with the stars still out and you'll hit the dam as the light comes up. This is the one to do first.

2 — Pak Nam Pran Beach Road Coastal Loop

70–95 km · 150–300m elevation

High Strava heatmap density for good reason. The coastal road running past Pak Nam Pran beach — pine trees on one side, Gulf on the other, almost no traffic before 8am — is one of the genuinely beautiful stretches of cycling road on this coast. The route extends north toward Hua Hin or south toward Pranburi, with the beach road section as the centrepiece. The villa sits 1.6km from this road. Early morning with the sun still low and the fishing boats already out, this is the ride that makes people come back.

3 — Hua Hin → Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park

45–108 km · 120–800m elevation

The big day-trip option. Head south from Pak Nam Pran through Pranburi and continue down toward the national park — limestone peaks appearing out of flat land to the south, wetlands on one side, Gulf on the other. The shorter version is a 45km out-and-back to the park entrance. The full version at 108km takes you deeper in, with serious elevation if you extend into the park roads. Very popular on Strava for the cave + coastal combination. An easy extension south from the villa — 30–40 minutes to reach the park boundary.

4 — Prachuap Bayfront + Ao Manao Loop

22–46 km · 40–170m elevation

30–40 minutes south of the villa, Prachuap Khiri Khan town sits on one of the most scenic bays in Thailand — a perfect horseshoe bay with limestone hills on three sides and a Royal Thai Air Force base at the southern end (Ao Manao). The bay road is flat, scenic, and almost traffic-free early morning. The air force base opens to visitors and has its own beach. This is the easy day — a recovery ride or a warm-up before something bigger. Worth doing for the bay alone.

5 — Pranburi Dam → Vineyard Hills Extension

75–86 km · 700m+ elevation

For riders who want climbing. The dam loop is already a solid workout; the vineyard hills extension adds serious gradient in the hills behind Hua Hin. Loved by the Hua Hin Roadies as a challenging addition without leaving the area. You gain real views from the higher sections — the flat coastal plain, the Gulf in the distance, the dam reservoir below. Best in the cooler months (November–February) when the heat doesn't turn the climb into punishment.

6 — Pak Nam Pran Beach Road → Pranburi Town Loop

40–60 km · under 200m elevation

The local loop — beach road south, swing inland through Pranburi town, return via the forest park road. Quiet beachfront, the mangrove forest option as a stop, the Pranburi river crossing. This is the route for a Tuesday morning when you want 90 minutes of good riding without committing to a full day. Literally on the doorstep — the beach road starts at the villa gate.

7 — Khao Kalok + Dolphin Bay

30–50 km · 100–200m elevation

Short adventure loop heading south along the coast to Khao Kalok — the limestone headland visible from the beach — then continuing to Dolphin Bay (Sam Roi Yot Beach), a quiet bay known among locals for its fishing boats and calm water. The road passes the seafood market at the base of the headland. Good as a recovery ride or a warm-down after a longer effort. The Khao Kalok approach gives you the mountain on your right and the Gulf on your left for about 10 minutes, which is worth it regardless of pace.

8 — Hua Hin Town Loop + Night Market Circuit

35–55 km · under 150m elevation

North to Hua Hin, through the town roads, around the night market area and back via the coastal road. Best done early before Hua Hin's traffic builds. The return via the beach road gives you a long flat section to open up. More of an urban ride — useful if you want to combine the spin with a breakfast stop in town or pick something up before the day gets going.

9 — Kaeng Krachan Direction Climb

80–120 km · 800m+ elevation

The serious option. Heading inland and northwest from Hua Hin toward Kaeng Krachan National Park, the roads climb properly into the hills. This is not a route for the first day — it's for riders who've done the dam loop and want to know what else is out here. The park is one of Thailand's largest and the approach roads give you long stretches of climbing through sugar cane and pineapple fields before the forest begins. Allow a full day and start very early.

10 — Sam Roi Yot → Prachuap Full Coastal Run

90–130 km · 200–400m elevation

The full coastal strip — from the national park in the south all the way to Prachuap Khiri Khan town, with the villa roughly in the middle. Flat coastal road for most of it, with the limestone peaks of Sam Roi Yot behind you and the Gulf alongside. This is the route that shows you the whole coastline you're living on in one ride. Best done as a point-to-point with a car pickup at the far end, or as an out-and-back from the villa using either end as a turnaround.

Harry's Bike Café — The Hub

Every serious ride in this area passes through or ends at Harry's Bike Café, situated on the cycle lane between Hua Hin and Pranburi. Coffee from a local Pranburi roastery, smoothies, breakfast — open Tuesday to Sunday from 7am. More usefully, they publish free GPX downloads for every route in the area on their website. Download before you leave and you won't need to think about navigation.

Harry's also runs the Hua Hin Cycling Club events and hosts the Duathlon Wednesday group rides starting at 7am. If you want to plug into the local riding community, this is where it happens.

Practical Notes

Best time to ride: Before 8am without question. The roads are empty, the light is good, and the temperature is manageable. After 9am the sun becomes the main obstacle on any route without shade.

Hire and rental: Road bikes available for hire in Hua Hin. Basic bikes available locally in Pak Nam Pran for the shorter coastal loops.

The Hua Hin Roadies: An active group riding the dam loop on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday mornings. Worth connecting with if you're here for more than a few days — they know every road extension and the best time to ride each one.

From the villa: The beach road is 3 minutes away. Harry's Café and the dam loop start is 20 minutes. Everything on this list is accessible without a car transfer.
